Carlsberg Malaysia has reached a significant milestone by becoming the first brewery in the world to produce ChongQing beer outside China, opening a new chapter for one of China’s most recognised local beer brands.

The achievement reflects more than a production milestone. It highlights the growing business ties between Malaysia and China while showcasing Malaysia’s capabilities as a regional manufacturing and distribution hub. It also demonstrates how established Chinese consumer brands are expanding internationally through strategic partnerships and local production.

Originally introduced in Chongqing in 1958, ChongQing beer carries nearly seven decades of brewing heritage. Now, through Carlsberg Malaysia’s local brewing expertise, the brand is making its first step beyond its home market while preserving its signature taste and identity.

A New Milestone for Regional Brewing

The launch represents a unique collaboration between Carlsberg Malaysia and Carlsberg China, combining local brewing capabilities with one of China’s best-known beer brands.

Rather than relying on imported products, ChongQing beer is now brewed locally in Malaysia. This allows the brand to improve product availability while maintaining consistent brewing standards and quality.

The collaboration also reflects a broader trend where global companies are using regional production networks to serve growing consumer demand more efficiently across Asia.

Meeting Growing Interest in Chinese Brands

Malaysian consumers have shown increasing interest in Chinese brands, cuisine and lifestyle experiences in recent years.

The popularity of hotpot restaurants, regional Chinese cuisines and authentic dining concepts has created opportunities for complementary food and beverage products. ChongQing beer has been positioned to match these occasions with its light, refreshing and easy-drinking profile.

With an alcohol content of 3.8% ABV, the lager is designed to pair well with flavourful Chinese dishes and communal dining experiences, making it a natural addition to Malaysia’s diverse food culture.

Local Brewing with Global Standards

Producing an established international brand outside its country of origin requires close technical collaboration.

According to Carlsberg Malaysia, every stage of production, from recipe alignment and brewing parameters to quality validation, was carefully managed to ensure the beer retains the same taste profile associated with ChongQing beer in China.

A key role in this process was played by Roger Li, Regional Sustainability Director, Carlsberg Asia, who previously served as Supply Chain Director of Carlsberg Malaysia. Drawing on more than two decades of brewing experience across China and Malaysia, he helped facilitate technical knowledge transfer between both teams throughout the project.

The result is a locally brewed product that remains faithful to ChongQing beer’s heritage while making it more accessible to consumers in Malaysia.

Strengthening Malaysia's Manufacturing Capabilities

Beyond the product launch, the project reinforces Malaysia’s growing reputation as a regional manufacturing hub.

The successful local production of ChongQing beer demonstrates the country’s ability to meet international brewing standards while supporting multinational brand expansion across Southeast Asia.

Malaysia’s established production infrastructure, skilled workforce and nationwide distribution network continue to make it an attractive destination for companies seeking regional growth opportunities.

As more international brands explore local manufacturing partnerships, similar collaborations could further strengthen Malaysia’s position within Asia’s consumer goods industry.

Building Stronger Malaysia-China Business Connections

The launch also highlights deepening commercial collaboration between Malaysia and China.

To mark the milestone, Carlsberg Malaysia welcomed a delegation of leading Chinese media organisations to Kuala Lumpur. The visit offered first-hand insights into the brewing process and the company’s investment in producing ChongQing beer locally.

The delegation also explored Malaysia’s growing appreciation for Chinese food culture and examined how local production supports the regional expansion of Chinese consumer brands beyond traditional export models.

The initiative reflects how business partnerships are creating new opportunities for cultural exchange, manufacturing collaboration and regional market development.

Available Across Malaysia

ChongQing beer is now available in 490ml cans at 99 Speedmart outlets nationwide as part of its initial launch.

The nationwide rollout allows consumers to experience one of China’s iconic local beer brands brewed locally for the first time while maintaining its authentic brewing heritage.

As Malaysia’s food and beverage sector continues to evolve, collaborations like this demonstrate how innovation, manufacturing expertise and regional partnerships can create new opportunities for both businesses and consumers.
